New Article Announcement: Game Diary

Hello everyone! So a couple weeks ago marked the final release of the How to be a Good Gamer series of articles. In the last one, I mentioned that a new article would take its place on Saturdays. Well today we’re announcing what this article will cover. The new article series will be called Game Diary, and it’s going to feature my own first hand reports and experiences on a game I’ve never played before as I play it. I’ll play through the game bit by bit each week, and at the end of the week I’ll write up an article about my experience so far, what’s gone on in the game, and how I feel about the story, graphics, mechanics, gameplay, etc. The best part about this is if you want to, you can play the game right alongside me as I’ll be releasing a listing for each game on what portion I’ll be playing each week.

So for my first game selection for Game Diary I’ve selected: Tomb Raider (2013). Not only will this be my first time playing this title, but this will actually by my first entry into the Tomb Raider franchise and I’m excited to delve in. Since I’ve never played it before, I haven’t gone into any spoiler territory, but have looked up minor things such as average playtime and chapter listings to navigate how much I’ll be playing at a time and here’s what I came up with:

  • Week 1
    • Introduction
    • Coastal Forest
    • Mountain Temple
  • Week 2
    • Mountain Rendezvous
    • Mountain Village
    • Base Approach
  • Week 3
    • Mountain Base
    • Base Exterior
    • Cliffside Village
  • Week 4
    • Mountain Pass
    • Chasm Monastery
    • Shanty Town
  • Week 5
    • Cavern Entrance
    • Geothermal Caverns
    • Solarii Fortress
  • Week 6
    • Summit Forest
    • Shipwreck Beach
    • Cliffside Bunker
  • Week 7
    • Research Base
    • Chasm Stronghold
  • Week 8
    • Chasm Shrine
    • Chasm Ziggurat

Each week should be around 5 hours of gameplay which seems reasonable. So next Saturday I’ll be releasing an article talking about my experience with the Introduction, Coastal Forest, and Mountain Temple. If anyone wants, you can play that portion along with me and share some of your thoughts come Saturday. And if you have an idea for a future game you’d like to show up on Game Diary, feel free to make some suggestions! Some games may not be possible to do with this structure, so if your game can’t be a part of this article, here are some of the reasons one why that might be.

  • The game is too long. I’m looking to stick to games that fall between 20-50 hour marks, so no epic quest JRPGs will work out.
  • The game has no clear end mark. For instance games that rely solely on online play, or sandbox games such as Minecraft, Roblox, MMOs, MOBAs, Garry’s Mod, Dead by Daylight, etc.
  • The game isn’t compelling enough. This would be for games such as Match 3 or small puzzle games that mostly repeat the same style throughout the game.
  • I’ve played it before. Unfortunately there’s no real way for you to know if a game you suggest is something that I’ve already played, but for the most part, I’m attempting to stick to blind playthroughs so that I can write my experience coming from the position of a first impression.

Let me know in the comments if you ever have any game suggestions and I’ll see you all next week for the first issue of Game Diary! And if you’re interested in playing along but don’t have the game, you can buy it here!
